How To Wear And Store Your Precious Jewels
in Blog PostsJewellery is timeless.
You can wear them for a long time. You can even pass them on to succeeding generations and turn them into a family heirloom that will be a treasure for decades and even centuries to come.
But all these can only be possible if you know how to take care of your precious stones, whether these are Argyle diamonds or Australian pearls.
So how do you do this? You need to know how to wear and store them properly.
Wearing Your Jewellery
You can wear your jewellery anytime and anywhere, if you want to. But if you really want them to remain untarnished and retain their beauty for years, you need to take caution when, where and how you wear these.
Wear them last.
Put on lotion, make-up, perfume and hairspray first before donning your fine pieces of jewellery. All these beauty products contain chemicals that will cause damage to your precious stones, so it’s best to keep them out of the way when putting on your jewels.
Don’t wear them in pools, hot tubs and spas.
Chlorine can cause colour changes, and in some cases even structural damage to your lovely ornaments. Make sure you don’t have them on when in these places.
Take them off when cleaning.
You should never expose your jewellery to household cleaning products as these too contain chemicals that may damage them. Aside from cleaning, you should also take these off when gardening, or doing kitchen work.
When playing contact sports, never have them on.
Aside from the damage that can be caused to the stones by the people involved, a good amount of sweat can contribute to their deterioration. When playing sports or doing other strenuous activities like exercising or hiking, you should take them off.
Storing Your Jewellery
Where and how you store them also matters. This can spell the difference between a worn-out piece of jewellery and an exceptional looking one, even after years of having them.
Wipe them before storing them.
After taking off your jewellery, wipe each one with a soft cloth to remove oils or perspiration that may have stuck to them.
Store them individually.
Most jewellery comes with a soft bag or padded box when you buy them. These are the best place to store them. It’s good to store them individually as this will prevent scratches. If you wish to store them in one box though, make sure these are individually wrapped or use a box with individual padded slots for pieces like your south sea pearl rings or pearl pendants.
Maintain a favourable temperature.
Too much light and heat is not good for your jewellery. Make sure to store them far from heating vents and window sills. Also avoid sudden changes in temperature as these will not be good for your valuable stones.
How you take care of your jewellery will determine how long they can retain their beauty. Make sure you keep your precious stones in their highest quality by ensuring you follow the tips detailed above.
