FORMER Sunshine Coast student Jodi Penfold has a chance e-mail about a cubbyhouse to thank for her sparkling career in the jewellery industry.
Two years ago, the 22-year-old, who designs jewellery exclusively for a West Australian pearling company, was days away from finishing her apprenticeship in Nambour when her father received an order that would lead to his daughter's big break.
"My dad builds playgrounds and he received an e-mail from the manager of a pearl farm because he wanted to buy a cubbyhouse for his son," she said.
"My dad said my daughter's a jeweller, she'd like to talk to you about buying pearls. I called him the next day and the day after that I bought my plane ticket to come over here."
Three months later Jodi returned to Queensland and packed her bags for Broome where she works for her own company JP Jewellery in conjunction with Clipper Pearls and designs and makes a collection of handcrafted jewellery.
"It's just me in my workshop and I start working out on the boat with the pearl company and I grade the pearls for them," she said.
"Then I go through the process of drilling and stringing the pearls and then I design the jewellery and manufacture the jewellery."
Her designs include bangles, necklaces, pendants, rings and bracelets. They are sold through a local art gallery with many of the items one-offs or part of a limited collection.
Ms Penfold estimated she designs and makes about five or six pieces a week and tries to keep an Australian feel by using local gems and gold.
Not only is her new career a long way from home, it is also a far cry from her first foray in the jewellery industry.
"My very first job when I was 14 was as a sales assistant in a jewellery shop," she said.
"As soon as I finished school I started my apprenticeship. I finished my apprenticeship the day before I jumped on the plane to Broome."
